Blogger Spotlight: The Girl Who Lived for Clothes

Today I am super excited to share with you my first post in the Blogger Spotlight series! The first blogger I will be featuring in this series is Miranda of The Girl Who Lived for Clothes. I am such a huge fan of Miranda’s style and vibe, both of which are daring, confident and colourful. Her unique fashion sense can’t be replicated and that’s why I admire her so much!

Scroll down to read my interview with fellow Melbourne blogger, Miranda Lewit-Mendes of The Girl Who Lived for Clothes.

What motivated you to start The Girl Who Lived for Clothes?

I always wanted to start a blog, before it was really a thing. As a teenager, I dressed differently to my peers and this was definitely not always positively received. I started the blog as I wanted to share my outfits with a broader range of people, with the hope of finding others who appreciated fashion as a creative outlet and styling differently to the norm.

Describe the trends are you most excited about for winter!

The trend I’m definitely most excited about is faux fur – I have about 5 faux fur coats and counting. They’re just like big cuddly balls of warm fun. I also love boots – a statement boot in a metallic texture or print, and over-the-knee boots are so perfect for getting away with shorts/skirts in winter.

Please share with us something people would be surprised to learn about you?

When I’m not blogging, I’m being a massive science nerd – studying genetics and working in pharmaceuticals.

If you could swap wardrobes with anyone in the world, who would it be and why?

Anyone who owns the newest Kenzo collection – three words, blue fluffy jumper.

Where is your fave place to travel to? What is your go-to airport outfit?

Funnily enough, I’m writing this on an aeroplane. I’m currently wearing monogrammed white sneakers, leopard print culottes, a black tshirt with fringes and a black Kenzo jumper. I try to keep comfy and wear dark colours in case of inevitable drink/food spills. Europe and Japan are definitely my top travel choices.

Name your favourite designers!

When I was a teenager, I adored Alexander McQueen, for his tenacity and willingness to push boundaries. Kenzo is also one of my all time favourites and their latest collection is insanely on point – one of my first memories of shopping was in Paris when I was 10 years old and my mum bought me a Kenzo Kids jacket. I’ve still got the jacket.

What is your main source of information when it comes to staying up to date on the fashion industry?

Blogging is a good way of having designer pieces shoved in your face everyday haha. It definitely keeps me up to date on the latest Gucci bag. I used to be devoted to reading Vogue, knowing every last detail about who was designing for who and knowing every trend coming down the runway each season – unfortunately with blogging I don’t have a huge amount of time for that anymore (ironic given the reason I blog is because I love fashion). I do love Fashion Journal for short but very sweet (and sometimes very bitter) updates. Vogue news is always good too.

Shooting in Melbourne can be really tough due to the unpredictable weather conditions. Do you have any funny stories of shoots gone wrong?

Nothing too dreadful has happened, yet. I think about half of Melbourne has probably seen me in my bra getting changed in the car though.

The blogging world has really blown up in the last few years, what are your thoughts on the future of Fashion Blogging?

Very true – its hard to see how blogging could possibly get ANY bigger. Sometimes I feel like every second person is a blogger these days. That said, social media marketing is definitely not going anywhere. I’m not sure how, but I think social media platforms will continue to change and develop, perhaps evolving to support social media marketing in different ways. Instagram seems to change every 5 seconds so who knows what blogging will be like in a few months or years!

Who are the bloggers which you admire most?

I remember looking at Chiara Ferragni’s The Blonde Salad website (not instagram) years and years ago. It’s so cool how she started blogging before anyone really knew what blogging was and I’ve always loved her extravagant styling. Margaret Zhang is so incredibly creative and talented.

Your best advice for handling criticism?

I think it depends on the type of criticism. Consider if the criticism could be constructive – if yes, taking it into account could help improve your blog. Alternatively, if someone is simply criticising your personal style, then all you need to do is remember that personal style is personal style for a reason – you should always dress for yourself and if someone doesn’t like your style, then that’s their problem, not yours. They don’t have to follow you! One of my friends got some very hateful comments towards her sock and heel combination – instead of taking it personally, we had a good laugh.

What is your biggest advice for putting together a foolproof outfit?

I definitely struggle with this one, hence why I’m perpetually running 10 minutes late. If I’m in a huge hurry, I find it easiest to put together an outfit by choosing 1 statement piece (e.g. a top or bottom in a bright colour or print) and pairing it with either black or neutral colours. I then add a statement bag or a piece jewellery for extra oomph if needed. The statement pieces will stand out against the black and you’ll look instantly cool!
